11:10 AM - 11:30 AM

Presented by Professor Martin Bean, CBE

"Today is the slowest day of the rest of our working lives.” That provocation frames everything that follows.

Drawing on the latest global research, Professor Martin Bean CBE explores six defining education and labour market trends reshaping institutions right now, from the mainstreaming of skills-based hiring and the rise of AI as a daily co-worker, to the growing premium on enduringly human capabilities.

This session goes beyond trends. It makes the case that preparing students for the world of work is not a graduate attribute, it is a core institutional responsibility. How institutions design for belonging, applied learning, personalised support, and employment-ready outcomes is directly connected to student retention, learner success, and long-term competitiveness.

As institutions move toward a more connected, 360-degree view of the student, connected data and technology ecosystems are becoming critical enablers of timely support, insight-led decision making, improved student retention, and more seamless learner experiences across the full student journey.

The question is no longer whether to adapt, but how fast. Institutions that build connected, employer-anchored learning ecosystems, equip graduates to navigate a labour market defined by constant skills churn, and position themselves as platforms for lifelong capability will deepen industry engagement, attract a broader learner base, and secure sustainable growth in a market that is not waiting.

11:30 AM

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Facilitated by Mortarcaps with representatives from Future Skills Organisation, Tafe Directors Australia, and Student Voice Australia.

The panel looks at how education teams are already changing, and what still needs to shift, to better support students in a more mobile, diverse and outcomes‑focused system.
With perspectives from policy, delivery, innovation and students themselves, the discussion explores how roles, skills and ways of working are evolving as institutions respond to future skills, the Accord, and rising expectations around student experience and retention.
Rather than predicting the future, the panel focuses on what’s happening now, and what helps education teams support students with greater confidence.
